Airline Travel -
The Popular Way To Tobago

Airline travel is the easiest way to get to Tobago, and if your flight takes you to Trinidad, be sure to book the onward leg when you make your reservations.

TAB airport

Tobago Direct

You may fly directly here from some destinations in Europe.

  • British Airways arrives once a week from London's Gatwick.
  • ExcelAir, formerly Monarch, comes out of Gatwick.
  • Lauda Airlines from Austria started a direct run to Tobago in October 2004.
  • Martinair lands from Amsterdam twice a week.
  • Virgin Atlantic touches down from Gatwick
  • Condor operates out of Frankfurt, Germany

All these are charter companies. Virgin Airlines had its first flight to Crown Point from Gatwick, London on May 6, 2003. They were able to get an undertaking that the Tobago terminal would be enlarged to handle a 600 passenger load, and $75 million have been allocated for the upgrade. The upgrading has gotten underway.

Via Trinidad

If you arrive by any other air carrier, then you must go to Trinidad and make a connection to Tobago. For instance, Air Canada and American Airlines go only to Trinidad, as do Venezolana , ALM, Air Guyana, etc.If you use one of these, watch your arrival time to make sure you can get a connection. It is just a 20 min flight from Piarco in Trinidad to Crown Point Airport (TAB) But say, for example, you get to Piarco (Trinidad) at 8.30 pm. You may well be too late to get to Crown Ooint that same night, since the last flight out to TAB leaves at about 10.00pm. Don't forget, Trinidad becomes your point of entry. So you'll have to go through Immigration. Then you have to collect your bags. A large flight may have 300-600 pieces of baggage. And then you must go through to the Customs department. So please allow ample time for those procedures.

Some international travel agents aren't fully aware how long this could take.

SOME FREE ADVICE!

Last minute travel is never a bargain in T and T. Many last-minute people find themselves unable to get on or off the the island, for instance, during the Easter season, Carnival festivities and other holidays. The key is to book early. And watch the local calendar.

Example: March and April 2007 is the World Cup Cricket. Tickets for the games go on sale May 2006. So will many airplane tickets!

The "Airbridge"

This is the name given to the inter-island air service

This service has been cussed and discussed. What with a rising usage, especially during school vacations, other holidays and 'special-event' occasions, increasing inter-island business travel and insufficient capacity, this was and still could be a troubled mean of transit. However, since August of 2004 there was a doubling of passenger capacity, so happier days were here. Best to make your reservations from abroad.
There have been many ups and downs since that.
