Just Where is Tobago?

A Villa View Tobago lies 11 by 60,- to be exact, 110 9" degrees north latitude and 600 40" degrees west longtitude. South of the normal hurricane track.

The island is 300 sq.km. or 116 sq.miles.On the map it is cigar-shaped, only with lots of irregularities- bays and promontaries, which make for stunning scenery and sweeping beaches and sometimes steep drops toward the sea.

And winding roads. But there has been efforts to put them in good condition. The roads here are better than those in many islands that are reputed to be great tourist destinations.

On the southern side of the island is the Atlantic Ocean. Next stop to the east - Africa.

On the northern side is the Caribbean Sea.

Tobago is 22 miles from Trinidad at the nearest point - 82 miles by the usual sea route.

Trinidad and Tobago form the southernmost of the chain of islands that make up the West Indies. Once part of the South American mainland, this tropic isle bathes in the waters of the Orinoco River.

These bring with them nutrients for a wide variety of marine life. This accounts for the population of manta ray, which much delights the scuba-divers.

The population is be found mainly in the surrounding villages between mountain and coastline. The only flat area is at the western tip of the island, and this is where the airport is located and here you will find the vast majority of tourist accommodations.

Temperatures run between 90 F by day and 68 F at night. We have two seasons - the rainy season from July to November and the dry season from December to June. Approximately!

You now know much more than Columbus knew when he got here. He ran into the place by accident. He was pretty glad to find some land, as his crew was ready to mutiny. But he was sure he had reached India. And since he had set out to reach the east by going west, the islands came to be called the West Indies.

There are about 55,000 people on the island, predomonantly descendants of Negro slaves. We also have Germans, Italians, Nigerians, Swiss, English, Irish, Indians (from India), Swedes,West-Indian East Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, Syrians, - in no particular order.

English is the official language, but the local dialect is delightfully expressive.

The currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar, which has been pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 6.29 TT dollars. Other major currencies are also negotiable

Cr Point Runway It is interesting when you overfly the island to notice how the distribution of houses delineates the geography. Away from the villages and populated areas, you will see the tin roofs glinting against the sun along the ridges of the mountain spurs. The folks may not all have fancy houses, but they have the knack of seeking out a view.

You will often surprise yourself, driving up a hill on some out of the way dirt road, when suddenly comes the most awesome panorama! The accompanying house may or may not not amount to much, but what a view!
