Speyside, the Marine Tourism Capital
No doubt named after the British seaside town. Tobago's Speyside is a small village on the Atlantic coast of Tobago, famous for its marine activity.
Here you will find the world-famous Blue Water Inn, distinguishable a long distance off by it's metal roof painted - you guessed it - blue. A pleasant blue. Water-in-the-bay blue. The Windward Road that runs from Scarborough to Charlotteville is the main strip here, and Speyside is along the way past Roxborough, only about 75 minutes from Scarborough. There is a diving outfit associated with the Blue Water Inn. You will find here those who like scuba diving and snorkelling, as well as many who enjoy the boat ride to the nearby islands, Goat Island and Bird of Paradise Island, a bird sanctuary, and Little Tobago. There are about 130 hectares of coral reef to explore here, going down to a depth of over 30 metres.
Romancing The Manta
- First person account by Fran Vandenberg of a 10-minute Ride on a Manta Ray on a dive here.
The largest brain coral in the world lives here,- some 12 ' by 16 '. The underwater visibility is reported to be phenomenal, though not as clear as, say the Bahamas, due to the inflow from the Orinoco River in South America.Along the road you must stop at Jemma's. It is a restaurant you cannot miss. It is announced by the large number of cars parked on the road. It is called Jemma's Tree restaurant, because it is built in, or more accurately, around a tree.
Along the way there you will find an example of how an entrepreneur could advertise cheaply in Tobago. Just find the most strategic tree! It could even be your own tree! It's Simple ! It's Cheap !! And its Effective !!!
The story goes that Buzz Aldrin, one of the astronauts who walked on the moon, was delighted to find, when he visited Speyside, that nobody of the local crowd knew who he was, or even cared. They just gave him a wonderful time!
