Golfing - Mt. Irvine and Hilton
Mt. Irvine Championship Course golfing happens on what used to be an old sugar and coconut estate. The very tall coconut trees that you must play through stand as a silent reminder of former days. But the course gives you a fantastic view of the Caribbean Sea at every tee.
The 6,973 yard course, set in among rolling country, has five Par 5 tees, eight Par 4's and 5 Par 3's. The 7th tee presents the challenge of out-of-bounds on the right and water on the left. In fact, there is water on the 7th, 9th, 10th and 18th.
The establishment is also known as the "Mt.Irvine Bay Hotel". It has long been overtaken by The Hilton, but in its heyday was voted a premier hotel in the Caribbean. In 1969 it was the site for the " Shell's Wonderful World" TV Series that highlighted this sport.
The Hilton is a slightly longer Par 72 course. Its 7000 yards takes you along the coastline of this 750-acre development, as well as through the coconut palms and mangrove. The property has many artificial wetlands and lakes. A bird-watcher here would have a hard time concentrating on his game.
The Hilton also has a 50-bay driving range.
As with the Mt. Irvine course, you can rent what you don't own - the exception being shoes. Be sure to bring your own.
