There four ways of getting to Tobago:

Air travel is by far the most popular way of getting here. Thousands of visitors use it each month. Some come directly from Europe. Others must make a stop first in the big-sister island of Trinidad. From there they can get here by using "The Airbridge" - the name for the inter-island air connection.

Those with a more leisurely schedule, or those rightly connected, can choose to use the ferry. The ferry though is mostly used by local travellers who are more familiar with its sailings.

Cruise ships make Tobago a port of call in their season, but are not for those planning to find out about place in any depth.

And finally the sailboat fraternity. But yachting is a specialized form of travel

However you get here, there are some things you should know.

Now when you land, if you come directly, , there are immigration and customs officers to satisfy. If you have a return ticket, accommodations and proper identification, you should have little trouble.

However it is not a bad idea to check with the T and T office in your country before you leave, as requirements do change from time to time.

A friend of mine went to Barbados with his proof of citizenship only and was admitted. Then he came to Tobago only to find that he needed to have a valid passport. He was allowed to stay because he had made a bona fide mistake and also had relatives here to stay with. Nevertheless he was issued a deportation order and had to check with immigration before he left.

If you are bringing gifts into the country you are now allowed $3000 TTduty free, including alcohol and cigarettes. Check before you come. You can also bring personal items for your use while here, and non-personal items which you can certify you are taking out with you when you leave. Personal items do not include CD's or stereo equipment.

Unless there is pressing reason to do otherwise, travel light. Especially if your stay is short. And never mind using space bags, because, if you have to open your space bag for customs inspection, you'll never get your stuff in again without a vacuum cleaner.

Bring only enough cash to meet your immediate needs. Many Tobago businesses accept Mastercard or the Visa card, which you can also use at one of the ATM's. American Express is much less used. Diner's and Discover cards are unheard of in Tobago. Most bank cards can be used to access your account, if hey have the Interac or Plus logo on the back.

Also a word of caution. Don't bring in drugs. Nor attempt to take any out with you. We have many foreigners languishing in local jails, some with life sentences, who no doubt felt they were sophisticated enough to outwit the local police!

"Dress code" for eating out is casual elegant. Otherwise, it's just casual. However, avoid wearing your beach clothes into supermarkets and other public places. Several places have signs warning that bare feet, bare backs, and beachwear are unacceptable. There are no nude beaches on the island.

Once in Tobago, enjoy!
