Many Ways to Get About Tobago.

There are no shortage of ways to get about Tobago.Which way you choose will depend on where you are staying, what you want to do, and where you get your advice!

The folks at your lodgings will no doubt be helpful. Most Tobagonians love to give advice and opinions. Some without even being asked.

Many visitors stay some distance from the beaches and walk there as part of their exercise regime. A surfer walking along with his surf-board is a common enough sight.

By Cycle

If you stay in the western end of the island on or near the flat lands, and you are in good shape physically, you may choose to get about by bicycle. Thay can be rented near the airport for about $5.00 US a day. You can also get a bicycle for two. You will be able to go as far north as Plymouth and as far east as Scarborough without encountering any significant hills.

Helmets are mandatory if you choose to get about by bicycle. Remember that traffic is on the left!

By Motor Scooter or Motor Cycle

You can go one step higher and get about on a motor-scooter. . Some of the available ones can carry a second pasenger. To drive a anything with a motor on the roads you must have a valid driver's license. As a visitor you can use your home driver's license for 90 days before having to apply for a Trinidad and Tobago license.

Having moter transportation may encourage to go farther afield, but this will take you into the hilly regions. It won't be long before you appreciate the utility of the more powerful motor-cycle. That would be well worth whatever it costs. Some of our hills can be pretty steep. As examples, the climb out of Charlotteville, or up Flagstaff Hill and Zion Hill.

Stay Safe

Now, a word about driving in Tobago. If you are accustomed to driving in Europe you should have few problems. Driving is on the left there too.

If, however, your driving experience is limited to North America, where the right hand side of the road is the driving side, you could have a few exciting moments. The rule I follow is: Keep the steering wheel in the middle of the road and not near the edge. If you do that you will -or rather should- be OK.

Even so, every time I make the switch, habit causes some fleeting confusion. Watching the rest of the traffic generally helps.

Stay Alive

Enjoy driving in Tobago. If you like driving a stick-shift vehicle you could have even more fun getting about. But don't be too daring. You don't want to be discovered at the bottom of a ravine by some early-morning villager going to work.

The speed limit all over the island is 50km per hour or 30 mph. Many are the times you can't or, if sight-seeing, won't wish to go very much faster anyway.

However there is a stretch of straight-ish road between the airport and Scarborough called the Claude Noel Highway. Many regard this as the local autobahn, a superhighway, a test strip to verify all the automakers' performance claims. Accordingly, there is a full quota of total-wrecks lying on police station compounds.

However, not to worry! For the most part, you'll find the driving relaxing, and most drivers to be courteous. They will often give up their right of way for you and wave you on. Or flash their headlights, which is their way if saying "After you!". . Accept their courtesies and acknowledge by a wave or a quick toot on the horn. Two quick toots are even friendlier..

If you get about by night, make sure that you have a clean windshield. The potholes and places where the Water and Sewerage Authority, and sometimes the Electricity Commission, have dug up the road may come up rather unexpectedly. If you are following a local driver pay attention to his manoeuvres. Often the locals know where these obstacles are. At night, consider yourself favoured if oncoming drivers dip their light for you. Even an official local visitor's guide has commented on this lack of thought. And it seems that most vehicles are equipped with the brightest lights possible . This is not a bad thing in itself, as street lights are not to be found on all of the many roads.

Overall the roads here in Tobago are much better than in some other islands which are regarded as prime tourist destinations.

Don't Sleep Late

If you have business to do in Scarborough, the secret is to get about early. Banks open for business at 8.00 a.m. Government offices at 8.30 a.m Once you get caught in a line-up at one of these places, you will see the value of getting an early start.
